Ways to Keep Your Kindergartner Focused in Virtual Learning in Spite of Allergies
Florida’s schools are closed for the remainder of the academic year, much to the dismay of every kindergarten parent. Kindergartners are notorious for lacking focus and drive to learn. They don’t yet understand why learning is important or why they should pay attention in class. When that class is divided among 30 homes instead of 30 desks, there’s no doubt that many kindergarteners are falling behind.
One of the biggest challenges for many children is sitting still through classes when they are suffering from allergies. The indoor air quality of public schools is tightly controlled. But when your child is at home, they are exposed to dander, dust mites, and other allergens that can exacerbate symptoms.
If you are also working from home, you know how difficult it is to block out the rest of the household and get down to business. Think about how much more difficult it is for such a young child to be able to do the same. It is no wonder that a runny nose, sneezing, coughing, or wheezing would distract them further and make learning impossible.
The best way to make sure your child can focus on their lessons is to treat their symptoms first thing in the morning when they wake up. There are many over-the-counter and at-home remedies that might be of assistance, but you should talk to your doctor before starting any new treatment.
If you’re not sure if your child is sick or has allergies, contact your doctor to determine if you should be tested for COVID. If not or if you have a negative test and your child still has allergy like symptoms, contact us to schedule your child’s complete allergy testing and treatment plan.
In the meantime, you can work to keep your child focused on school by remaining in the room with them during class time to keep them on task. You should also make sure that your child is able to set alarms and timers to keep them on task and on time for their virtual classes. Giving them tissues and a fidget spinner will also help keep them in their seat during class time.
